Spring is fast approaching, and for many of us that also means the approach of allergy season. But did you know that some of the design choices you make for your home can help to reduce your exposure to allergens?
Many people believe that having wood flooring is the best option if you have allergies to things like dust, pollen, or pet hair. And it’s true that wood flooring beats certain types of carpets and fibrous materials, especially if you clean your floors regularly. If you think about it, though, wood floors allow for allergens to sit on their surfaces. These allergens will then continue to float around in the air every time someone disturbs them. Often, the particles are invisible, so no amount of cleaning can remove all of the allergens from the space.
Actually, the best material for controlling the allergens in your home is wool. The natural fibers in wool rugs trap allergen particles and hold them on the surface of the carpet. When you vacuum over the area, all of those particles are then sucked up and disappear. And because the particles are trapped until you break out the vacuum, they won’t be floating around in the air causing problems.
